Wasp Season Is On It’s Way!

If you have been out and about recently you may have noticed the odd wasp, these a more than likely the fertile queen wasps on the hunt to find a suitable place to nest for the year!

Life Cycle

During the spring when the weather starts to warm up the queen wasp will emerge from hibernation and start looking for a place to nest. When the queen has found a suitable spot for a nest she will begin to build it by stripping wood from nearby objects such as shed walls and fences. She will chew this up and mix it with wax and saliva to make a paste in which the nest will be built from.

Once the queen has started the nest she will also start to lay eggs. When the eggs hatch into their larvae form, the queen will then forage for food to feed them, all while expanding the nest in size and population!

When the wasp larvae pupate into adult wasps they will then take over the duties of building the nest and looking after the larvae from the queen and she can solely focus on laying more eggs and controlling the nest.

Wasp Nests

Wasp nests can usually be found in places such as roof spaces, wall cavities, bird boxes, sheds, under eaves and garages. During the early spring a wasp nest will be no larger than the size of a golf ball however, as we progress into summer the size of the nest and its population will massively increase in some cases, they can be even larger than a football.

Wasp nests should be dealt with by professional pest controllers who have the right protection and equipment to deal with them as it can be a dangerous job. It is always best to remove a wasp’s nest earlier on in the year as the population will be smaller and less aggressive.
