Bristol Rat And Mouse Treatment
Bristol homes and businesses continually face rodent problems, from new-build apartments in Wapping Wharf to Victorian terraced houses in Bedminster and across the city.
There are many companies offering rat extermination and rodent control in Bristol. Some promise a quick fix by laying poison and leaving before the underlying cause of the problem has been identified.
But what about finding the source of the rat or mouse problem and dealing with it properly?
At Advance Pest Control Bristol, we aim to provide the best long-term outcome possible, not just a short-term fix. Wherever we can, we don’t just treat the infestation; we look for how rodents are gaining access and whether anything can be done to reduce the chances of the problem returning.
A Practical, Honest Approach to Rodent Control
Our goal is to clear your current infestation and, where possible, identify and address the source of the issue. However, it’s important to be upfront, in some situations, locating the exact source of a rodent problem can be extremely difficult.
Rodents in Bristol Properties
For example, with mice in terraced housing, we will inspect the front and rear of your property for any obvious points of ingress. If there is no break in the building fabric at either end, the most likely explanation is that mice are accessing the property via neighbouring houses.
Many Victorian homes were built with honeycomb walls at subfloor level to allow airflow. This construction method can allow rats and mice to move beneath floorboards and travel between multiple properties within a terrace.
When this is the case, it becomes almost impossible to permanently prevent rodents from entering a single property. At this point, rodent control becomes a management issue, dealing with rodents as and when they appear.
Although we always do our best to locate entry points, we do not carry a magic wand and cannot permanently resolve every rodent problem.
Rat Entry Points Are Often Easier to Identify
With rats, it is often easier to locate how they are entering a property. In Bristol, defective drainage is one of the most common causes of rat infestations.
Many parts of the city have very old infrastructure, including Victorian properties with aging brick and barrelled drainage systems. Rats can exploit surprisingly small defects, squeezing through gaps as little as 10 mm.
Rats do not usually climb the outside of buildings or scale drainpipes to access roof spaces. In most cases where rats are heard in kitchen extension roofs or ceiling voids, the issue originates from defective drainage. Rats escape from the drains and climb internally through wall cavities until they reach roof voids.
Your drainage system should be sealed. If there is a defect, rats within the drainage can easily find their way into your home.
Best Rated Bristol Rodent Control Specialists
As one of Bristol’s best-rated rodent removal companies (as recognised by 3 Best Rated), we understand the stress and disruption caused by discovering rats or mice in your home, business, or garden.
We help hundreds of homeowners, landlords, tenants, and businesses each year to resolve rodent problems across Bristol and the surrounding areas.
Rodents need to gnaw continually, and this behaviour can cause extensive damage within a building. Electrical wiring is a common target, which can lead to power faults and, in some cases, fire risk.
You can stop worrying; rodent control is what we do every day.
Bad Drains? A Common Cause of Rats in Bristol
Did you know that up to 8 out of 10 rat infestations in Bristol are linked to defective drainage?
Bristol has a large number of older properties, many with 100-year-old drainage systems. Over time, these drains can become damaged, misaligned, or broken.
Common rat entry points include:
Broken air bricks or vents
Holes left after redundant pipework has been removed
Defects within underground drainage
Although we do not carry out CCTV drain surveys ourselves, we work closely with a dedicated team who can carry out specialist drainage investigations where required.
Drain repairs can be costly and often run into thousands of pounds. Where appropriate, one of the most effective and affordable solutions is fitting a stainless steel non-return valve into an inspection chamber.
We have fitted thousands of these valves and successfully stopped rat problems for many customers. While a non-return valve does not repair the underlying drain fault, it usually prevents rats from exploiting it and entering the property.
We will always talk through the options available during your treatment.
How to Spot If You Have Rats or Mice
Common signs of rodent activity include:
Sightings
A rat is a relatively large rodent, usually around 10–12 inches in length. A mouse is much smaller, typically 3–4 inches from head to tail.
Noises
Scurrying or scratching sounds in wall cavities, ceilings, or boxed-in voids.
Droppings
Mice can leave up to 80 droppings per day. These resemble brown grains of rice and are often widespread. Rat droppings are much larger, closer to the size of a baked bean, and are usually found in specific areas.
Smear Marks
Brown greasy marks around pipes, holes, and along walls caused by natural oils in a rat’s fur.
Holes and Burrows
Rats may dig burrows in gardens, lawns, or shrubbery.
Nests
Both rats and mice shred materials such as paper, insulation, and plastic bags to create nesting areas.
Professional Rat and Mouse Treatments
Although there are many rodent control products available to the domestic market, these are rarely effective against an established infestation.
The most reliable course of action is a professional rat or mouse treatment, tailored to your property and the nature of the infestation.
Bristol Rodent Proofing
For both domestic and commercial properties, we carry out a full external inspection to identify potential rodent entry points.
External proofing may include sealing gaps where service pipes pass through the building fabric or addressing other accessible access points. Please note that external proofing is not included within the cost of treatment and is charged separately.
As a rule, we do not carry out internal proofing. Rats can pass through gaps as small as 10 mm, and mice through gaps of just 5 mm. Retrofitting a property to this level is rarely practical.
If internal proofing is required, we can recommend trusted specialists to carry out this work.
During treatment, we identify the safest and fastest method of clearance, ensuring complete safety for children, pets, and non-target species.
